Two dynamic, aspiring photographers got a once in a lifetime opportunity to shadow South Africa’s well-known photographer Austin Malema, while he was working on the Side Step #MyStyleIsReal campaign.
Side Step launched #TheSitDown in 2018 having the objective to feed the minds and souls of aspiring creatives. Our belief being that the knowledge and insights shared by accomplished individuals in their field being shared in a casual, open forum could be the fuel to feed the soul of an innovator. With the 2019 #TheSitDown Side Step wanted to add something extra. Side Step wanted to give aspiring creatives more than just knowledge, Side Step wanted to give some aspiring creatives an opportunity to experience the taste of working in their respective fields. Work experience is a big issue in South Africa with so many graduates unemployed due to lack work experience. Side Step saw this problem as an opportunity to use its resources to help hungry creatives gain some experience.

Neo and Xola were in the front row the whole shoot learning and asking as many questions as possible. They also got a rare opportunity to see how to handle the 1-million-Rand Phase One Camera.
The photo shoot started with Austin Malema teaching Neo and Xola the important relationship between the shutter speed, aperture and IOS. He took different images to show how the three aspects work to give you the perfect picture. In addition to all the photography lessons Neo and Xola got to learn more about handling models and client’s expectations. Directing models during a photo shoot to get all the right images your client needs. They also got to learn how to use lighting to highlight different colours, shadows and background. After a full day shoot Neo and Xola walked away inspired and educated from the experience.
